Recently returned from 7 days intensive Yachmaster Theory course at Sportscotland Cumbrae (which I can recommend, though my brain still hurts!)
I see a Yotlinx advertiser offering the course in 6 days on board a yacht alongside, suggesting benefits of a 'real chart table' learning environemnt over a classroom.
What do other Yotlinx members think of this approach? Personally, if I'd had to do 0900-1730 plus homework on board a yacht in a marina for 7 days, I suspect the environment might have driven me even more stir crazy than a classroom course normally does!

Winter theory classes on board, I don't think so! - Posted: January 3, 2009 - 5:20 PM

I have always thought of sailing theory, first aid, radar classes etc. something to do on winter evenings in a nice warm classroom with plenty of space and a bar not far away.
However, I can see why a charterer say, would want to use their assets in the winter. Also gets them dried out at someone else's expense. Nice try though!
There are lots of uses for a yacht but winter theory classes is not one of them. Not for me anyway.

I agree. I can't do evening classes because work prevents regular enough commitment, so intensive residential it has to be. Never mind the comfort etc, however, I'm not sure I would even learn theory as well on board as in a classroom. Would you teach driving theory behind the wheel? Or principles of flight in the cockpit on the airfield? Just doesnt seem to make sense as best training environment, or best use of time or resources.
