Why is the Algarve in Portugal NOT a popular destination for Yacht Charter - Posted: September 14, 2007 - 8:20 PM

I have been living in the Algarve for 18 months (nr Lagos). I have been quite suprised that the Algarve seems not have a buoyant charter market especially for bare-boat enthusiasts like myself. There are a number of charter companies here but most seem to offer skippered yachts. Maybe there is an opportunity for a business entrepreneur here! Anyone got any views why bareboat activity is common in Greece and Croatia etc. but not in the Algarve, especially as we do get our fair share of breezes here.

Something to do with the big scary Atlantic? - Posted: September 16, 2007 - 9:18 AM

I have never been to Potugal or sailed along the coast but I imagine that holiday charterers are probably quite a cautious bunch and prefer the less challenging more benign environment offered by the Med. If it is a crew's/family's big holiday of the year, they want predictability rather than being subjected to the uncertainties of an Atlantic swell in less sheltered waters.
But really, I don't know the answer to the question! Just a thought.

the bay if biscay is probably the reason why not alot of sailors want to go there, profesional sailors use the bay for round the world training.
And look what happened to sir Robin knox johnston
in the velux round the world race. His boat overturned 4 hours out from villamura in portugal.
In greece you can see the next island to visit without using any Gps AND ALOT EASIER TO NAVIGATE STEVE LIGHTBODY

ajmbwas has supplied the answer in a way - (sorry if this goes against your points) - I agree there are interesting places there. BUT..
Having sailed there (southen Pourtugal) myself, I am aware of the area. I have also run a RYA sea school and charter company, so I have a fair idea of what works and what does not. Simply put, there are not enough good ports close enough to each other to make this a charter destination.
With the Ionian or Croatia you can sail for an hour or less and have a nice anchorage or port to stop at for lunch or all day. If you want to sail for longer, well the options open up no end. Not something that can be done in Portugal.
Simple really...
On the other hand, the golf there is great!

Southern Portugal, The Algarve - Posted: December 3, 2008 - 11:31 AM

Just to clear up a matter of geographical location for some. The Algarve is in SOUTHERN Portugal and a long way from the Bay of Biscay. Furthermore I believe that Sir Robin departed from a port on the NORTH coast of Spain, Biscay YES but NOT the Algarve. Just to note, I was in La Coruna when he pulled in for repairs. It's a long way from Vilamoura, in The Algarve. Cheers everyone.
