What next for corporate regattas in Scotland? - Posted: September 12, 2008 - 10:31 AM

So, now that we've all recovered from the quite excellent Shell Regatta, the question arises - what does the future hold, given that Sunsail are shutting down? What do we think of the alternatives?, eg:
1. Someone continues the business model at Largs, possibly buying the Sunsail fleet as a starter pack
2. Another West Coast charterer(s) builds up a sufficient mixed-type fleet to support corporate sail training/team building/cruise in company events, but without the matched racing element
3. Next years Shell/ExxonMobil/Maersk Regattas (etc) will be at Port Solent (!) or overseas (!!)
4. The games a bogey: no more corporate sailing events for Scottish companies and their employees
5. Any other ideas?
Surely scope for a debate on this one?!

I thought it would be a bit of a disaster if the Largs operation disappeared and I am presently in negotiation with Sunsail and Largs Haven to try to buy 12 out of the 15 boats and to retain the staff. There are some issues to resolve regarding premises but the hard stuff (the funding) is just about in place as are most aspects of the business plan. Should it go ahead then the emphasis will be on Corporate Charter, Private Charter, Skippered Charter and, most importantly, Sail Training.

Personally I reckon you're right; 10-12 is a sensible number of boats. Couldn't tell without sight of Sunsail's books, but I would have thought the number of times they had all 15 out was pretty limited!

Sunsail decides to move Largs fleet to Port Solent - Posted: October 26, 2008 - 9:57 AM

I am told by a Sunsail Events manager that Sunsail, after closing their Largs operation on 31st October, will move their entire Largs Sunfast fleet to Port Solent before the new year.

A quick update for you:
We made Sunsail a very fair, in our opinion, offer of £420,000 for the fleet of 12 boats. They would not accept less than £456,000. This was very, very frustrating but we did not dare commit any more than this in view of the present economic climate. Our target corporate markets were to be oil & gas and banking/finance, both of which are shaky at present.
It's a tremendous loss to Scottish sailing.

Congratulations on trying - I suspect in the current climate in particular, Sunsail will come to regret declining your offer.
On the other hand, if they want the entire fleet delivered to Port Solent by New Year, perhaps one last Yotlinx trip with Sunsail is in order.
Now, whats the going rate to pay a delivery crew . . .

Hmmm - 15 boats to the south coast before New Year. Need a month off to allow for the weather.
And I don't recall seeing Eberspachers on board, but I might be wrong on that one.

Congratulations on your great offer they obviously don't know what the are trowing away.
However did Sunsail really closed the door. I mean I was speaking to one of the members of the Edinburgh sailing team and the Scottish Universities are using the Sunsail fleet also. I'm not very good at politics but certainly with the right amount of pressure from big users of the fleet it might just be achievable.
Is it really to late or can we still change this around?
